Sexual assault affects everyone, either directly or through the experiences of those we care about.
It is common for survivors of sexual assault to have feelings of embarrassment, anger, guilt, panic, depression, and fear. These feelings can last for even several months or years after the attack.
Other common reactions include:
- loss of appetite
- nausea or stomachaches
- headaches
- loss of memory
- trouble concentrating and changes in sleep patterns
What to do if your family member or friend tells you they have been sexually assaulted while in custody:
- REPORT THE ATTACK TO A STAFF MEMBER IMMEDIATELY. This is the quickest way to get the investigation started and get the person to safety. The longer you wait to report the attack the more difficult it is to obtain the evidence necessary for a criminal investigation.
- If you do not feel comfortable reporting the assault to staff, then you may call the PREA hotline at 512-267-7233 to report it or let the jail administration know by calling 208-529-1315 ext. 5303.

False reporting of an allegation of rape, sexual assault, or sexual activity will be reviewed for prosecution.
Agency Policy
In compliance with Section 115.22 of the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) Standards, the Bonneville County Jail has policies to ensure either administrative or criminal investigations are completed on all allegations of sexual abuse or sexual harassment, or they are referred to an agency, or entity, with the legal authority to conduct the investigations.
Data Review for Corrective Action and Publication
In compliance with Section 115.88 of the PREA Standards, the Bonneville County Jail has reviewed data collected and aggregated, pursuant to Section 115.87, in order to assess and improve the effectiveness of its sexual abuse prevention, detection, and response policies, practices, and training, including:
- Identifying problem areas;
- Taking corrective action on an ongoing basis; and
- Preparing an annual report of its findings and corrective actions.
Also, in compliance with Section 115.89 of the PREA Standards, the Bonneville County Jail shall make aggregated sexual abuse data readily available to the public at least annually.
The Jail Administrator, or designee, will issue an annual report assessing our corrective action progress in addressing sexual abuse.
