UPDATED NEWS RELEASE
Since last week the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office has been in contact with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) with regards to being listed as a “Limited Cooperation Facility” for ICE Detainers and processes. The Sheriff’s Office was made aware of this issue after several entities reported the Center for Immigration Studies listed the Bonneville County Jail as being a Sanctuary County based on the ICE list.
Through conversations with ICE, it was determined there was not any reason for the Bonneville County Jail to be listed as such and they were unaware of why it happened. ICE advised the Bonneville County Jail had been honoring the 48 hour detainer window and they would be removing the facility from their list. Additionally, records at the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office showed 78 inmates had been processed on ICE Detainers since 2019 and all 78 had been released to ICE after their criminal justice process was finished in Bonneville County.
The Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office has a good working relationship with DHS and ICE on these matters and will continue fulfilling it’s responsibilities according to the law. Because the spread of misinformation can happen at record pace, Sheriff Sam Hulse recommends our community be cautious of information published by entities or various media platforms that appear to have not done their due diligence in confirming facts and information.

NEWS RELEASE
The Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office has been made aware of reporting from various independent groups that its jail facility had been added to an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) list of facilities categorized with different levels of cooperation with regards to Immigration holds. According to the reports, the list was updated on June 21st of this year and now shows the Bonneville County Jail as a “Limited Cooperation” facility.
Bonneville County Sheriff Samuel M. Hulse reiterated today the jail’s continual cooperation and working relationship with ICE on immigration holds. “The Bonneville County Jail continues to fulfill its responsibilities regarding Immigration holds, notifications to ICE, and the detainer process.” said Sheriff Hulse. “We are unaware of why our facility would be added to that list and refute any accusations that we have been anything other than cooperative.” Sheriff Hulse cited the current stress on ICE and Dept. Of Homeland Security resources causing inadequacies at the border and the current federal administration allowing over 12 million illegal entries into the United States as a possible contributing factor.
The Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office will be seeking an explanation from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and ICE as to why our facility is categorized as “Limited Cooperation” and their process of evaluation. In the meantime the Bonneville County Jail will continue to be fully compliant with ICE on immigration detainer processes.
