UPDATED NEWS RELEASE
The East Idaho Critical Incident Task Force has finished their investigation of the Officer Involved Shooting from December 17th, 2025 on 145th N. (aka. N. County Line Rd.) involving Landon Smith of Madison County. The findings of the task force investigation were then referred to Bonneville County Prosecutor Randy Neal for review.
Information identified in the investigation included the previously released details regarding Mr. Smith being involved in a domestic dispute and stealing a vehicle in Madison County on the evening of Dec. 16th. Smith was spotted by Bonneville County Sheriff’s Deputies around 11pm that evening after he fled from an attempt at a traffic stop in the Ammon area. This was prior to Deputies having knowledge of the incident in Madison County that was under investigation.
Later that night, in the early hours of Dec. 17th, Smith was again spotted in the stolen jeep on Ammon Rd. near Lincoln Rd. where he again fled from Deputies at a high rate of speed. Moments later Smith was spotted by Deputies responding to the area in Ucon and followed to 145th N. (N. County Line Rd.) where he turned east toward Ririe.
Dep. Kyle Penny was able to get in position to perform a PIT maneuver on Smith’s vehicle in the 9000 E. block of 145th N. effectively stopping his continued movement. Investigators determined Smith then fired one round from a handgun causing a self-inflicted wound to his head. At the same time Dep. Penny returned fire after perceiving he was being shot at from Smith’s vehicle. Dep. Bill Stadtman, a backup Deputy in the pursuit, also returned fire toward Smith’s vehicle. The investigation determined Smith was not struck by rounds from either Deputy and only suffered from one self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Life-saving efforts were performed by Deputies and arriving ambulance personnel on scene before Mr. Smith was transported to the hospital. Despite those efforts Smith succumbed to his injuries on December 21st, 2025.
The Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office has released portions of car and body camera video from the Deputies involved in the incident, redacting graphic details of what happened. However, caution is still advised to viewers due to the graphic nature of the circumstances. A link to the video can be found HERE.

Bonneville County Sheriff’s Deputies were involved in a shooting early this morning with a man being sought for his involvement in a physical domestic and a stolen vehicle in Madison County. Just after 3:30 am, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office advised they were looking for a man who been involved in a physical domestic earlier in the night and then stole a vehicle from another residence. The man was believed to be armed and there were indications his intent was to commit suicide by a police officer. Earlier in the evening, approximately 11pm (Dec. 16th), Deputies had encountered a man driving the vehicle in question in a reckless manner with no lights on near S. Ammon Rd. and 49th S. The circumstances surrounding the vehicle or the Madison County incident were not known at that time. As a Deputy attempted a traffic stop on the vehicle, the driver fled at a high rate of speed and the stop was discontinued for safety reasons.

As the search continued, Madison County Deputies received information just after 5:30am the man was near 17th St. and Ammon Rd. Deputies responding to the area noticed the vehicle on Ammon Rd. traveling northbound at a high rate of speed with no headlights on, almost striking other vehicles and going over the roundabout island at Ammon Rd. and Lincoln Rd. Deputies attempted get behind and stop the vehicle but lost sight of it weaving in and out of traffic in the dark.

Moments later a Deputy in an unmarked patrol car spotted the vehicle in the City of Ucon, still traveling with no lights on and weaving into oncoming lanes of traffic. The Deputy followed the vehicle on N. Yellowstone to County Line Rd. where the vehicle turned east, until more patrol cars could get to the area.

As the vehicle was approaching 95th E., a Deputy attempted to stop it using a PIT technique, which turned the vehicle off the side of the road and into the gutter. The driver began firing rounds and two of the Deputies returned fire. The driver was injured and Deputies provided medical assistance until ambulance personnel arrived.

No other occupants were in the vehicle, and the driver was transported by Idaho Falls Ambulance to East Idaho Regional Medical Center with life threatening injuries. None of the Deputies involved were injured during the incident.
