A wide variety of constantly changing scams targeting our community is nothing new. The nature and method of these scams typically repeat but with minor changes and nuances that still catch some victims by surprise. A common theme to the success of these scams are suspects posing or sending information that appears to be from Law Enforcement or Government entities that carries the threat of arrest or criminal action if the victim fails to respond. Suspects utilize every method from the internet, online social media, to text and phone calls to find their victims.
To help prevent our community from falling victim to these scams, we’ve listed several helpful resources on the Community Resources Page of our website and Mobile App (Idaho Sheriff Connect). The list includes links to the Fraud Division of the Idaho Attorney General’s Office and the FBI’s Internet Crime Reporting page, where users will find information and even educational videos on how to avoid being a victim.
If you have lost money or property due to a scam or fraud always contact your local Law Enforcement to make a report. Bonneville County residents can contact a Deputy through the Bonneville County Dispatch center at 208-529-1200.
Regardless of whether you’ve lost money or just received scam calls, texts, or messages, it’s always a good idea to regularly check your online and financial accounts for suspicious activity. Utilize the security features provided by internet, social media platforms, and financial institutions and change your passwords often. Be suspicious of entities soliciting personal information that you have not taken time to reasonably verify.
