UPDATED NEWS RELEASE
The following is an updated joint news release from the Bingham and Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office:
Following the investigation by the East Idaho Critical Incident Task Force into the Officer Involved Shooting on August 19th, 2025 on 1330 E. outside of Shelley, ID, the Bingham County Prosecutor’s Office released findings of the investigation indicating Deputies involved were justified in their actions relating to use of deadly force against the suspect Talon Sessions. In addition to the Prosecutorial review and analysis, portions of the 911 call and related body camera and drone video were consolidated into one critical incident video for release to the public for transparency and to further inform our community of the relevant details leading up to this unfortunate incident.
The video includes portions of the 911 calls received by the Bingham County Dispatch from a neighbor indicating two people were shooting at each other, one of which was injured and identified as the homeowner at the location. After the homeowner was transported away from the scene by ambulance, Law Enforcement resources from the area began searching for the second person involved in the shooting who was believed to be armed and injured. Body Camera and Drone video show the moments the second person, later identified as Talon Sessions, was located in a field west of the property apparently injured and armed with a handgun. After more than two minutes of verbal commands from Deputies to put his hands up, Sessions pointed the handgun at Deputies who then opened fire. Deputies were able to safely approach and secure the handgun followed by attempting life saving measures on Sessions who ultimately died at the scene.
The agencies involved take their responsibility with regards to public safety seriously, especially when it involves the use of deadly force. It’s important to remember there were injuries, trauma, and loss of life tied to this incident that affect families and neighbors in and around our community. Bingham County Sheriff Jeff Gardner and Bonneville County Sheriff Samuel Hulse felt it important to help the public understand what lead up to this incident and the processes involved in investigating it with the additional release of this video and information. Sheriff Gardner and Hulse wish to express their appreciation to the agencies who responded and the thorough investigation by the East Idaho Critical Incident Team.
