September 14th Memorial Remembering Idaho’s Missing

September 9, 2024

NEWS RELEASE

September 14th is a significant day for the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office, as it marks an important and still active missing persons case. On that day in 2001, Amber Hoopes went missing in the middle of the night from her grandparents home on Lincoln Rd. in Bonneville County. As the investigation progressed, one identified suspect was involved in a second kidnapping the following June (June 5th, 2002), resulting in a lengthy pursuit. The end of the pursuit, deep in the Big Hole Mountains in Madison County, resulted in a shooting where the suspect killed a Bonneville County Sheriff’s K-9 and shot another Deputy. Deputies returned fire hitting the suspect who then took his own life.

September 14th, 2024 marks 23 years since the disappearance of Amber Hoopes and has since become a day we remember all missing persons in Idaho. With that, a short memorial will be held in front of the Bonneville County Courthouse at 12 Noon on Saturday September 14th, 2024, to remember Amber and bring awareness to cases involving missing persons and their families. This event is open to the public and a proclamation signed by Idaho Falls Mayor Casper and Bonneville County Commissioners will be read, recognizing the significance of this day and these still open and active cases.

In addition to remembering those who are missing, our hope is to bring awareness and uncover missing pieces of these and other cases that have yet to be discovered. If you have information about an unsolved missing person or cold case, please contact your local Law Enforcement or the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office and speak with a Detective. Tips and information can always be shared anonymously through East Idaho Crime Stoppers online at www.IFcrime.org.
