NEWS RELEASE
Two men were arrested overnight after eluding Deputies and crashing in an Idaho Falls neighborhood. At around 12:30am this morning (Nov. 24) a Bonneville County Sheriff’s Deputy observed two vehicles at a high rate of speed racing next each other on 25th E. at 1st St. As the Deputy activated his emergency lights to attempt to catch up and initiate a traffic stop, one of the vehicles turned onto Mesa St. continued accelerating. Knowing the street was a dead-end, the Deputy arrived finding the vehicle had lost control and crashed into a tree in the front yard of a residence.
As more Deputies arrived on scene, two males were found getting out of the vehicle and quickly detained. The driver of the vehicle was identified as 18-year-old Augustine Perez Jr. and placed under arrest for Felony Eluding. The passenger was identified as 20-year-old Terrin Malik Hopwood and found to be in possession of THC Vapes. Through investigation Deputies located an AR-15 rifle in the vehicle and determined Mr. Hopwood tossed a 9mm handgun into the front yard of the residence at the crash scene just prior to the Deputy pulling up. Several more THC vape devices were also found underneath of the vehicle.
Both Perez and Hopwood were transported by Deputies to the hospital for a medical clearance due to minor injuries sustained during the crash before being taken to the Bonneville County Jail. Perez was booked into jail on a Felony Charge of Eluding and Hopwood was booked for Misdemeanor Possession of Marijuana. During the booking process Hopwood was found to be in possession of two additional THC vapes on his person.
Deputies are continuing to investigate, and no further information is available at this time.
