NEWS RELEASE
Bonneville County Sheriff’s Deputies have responded to at least six different water rescue events in the past week, ranging from vehicle crashes, boat crashes, and stranded water craft. Some have involved very experienced boat operators as well as people who are new to water recreation. Emergency response from BCSO and partner agencies have resulted in successful rescues without serious injury or death, however some have been very close calls that could’ve had a different outcome.
With Palisades and Ririe Reservoirs and the Snake River being very busy this time of year it’s important to plan for emergencies and safety before you recreate. Idaho waters and weather conditions can change quickly catching the unprepared people by surprise. Warm air temperatures and sunny weather doesn’t necessarily mean the risk of cold water exposure goes away, and it absolutely doesn’t negate the importance of wearing your life jacket. Too often BCSO Deputies rescue people who ignored basic safety practices because they were confident in their abilities, but suddenly themselves under prepared in an unexpected emergency.
BCSO Deputies want everyone to safely enjoy the outdoor recreation Bonneville County has to offer. Before you get on the water, take a moment to make sure you have proper safety gear and equipment. Know the weather and water conditions before hand, operate within your skills and don’t underestimate what hazards can be in the water or just under the surface. Be courteous to other people using waterways one the water or from the bank, let family and loved ones know where you are going and when you plan to return.
