NEWS RELEASE
The Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office is reminding boaters preparing for their water recreation activities to plan ahead for safety and emergencies. Just because last winter didn’t produce much in the way of snow does not mean we have less water hazards and dangers on our waterways.
Water flowing through the Snake River from spring runoff and pushing into irrigation systems is at significant levels, producing unique hazards and currents. Winter weather and recent spring winds produce debris and underwater hazards that can catch even the most experienced boaters by surprise. Bonneville County Sheriff’s Deputies have already responded to four water rescue calls in just over a month where vessels were damaged by debris, had mechanical problems, or were not prepared for water conditions. With the extremely cold temperature of the water and tendency for Idaho weather to change in an instant, a relatively calm ride on the water can very quickly turn into an emergency.
No one is immune to unforeseen emergencies on the water, and the best way to enjoy our waterways is to plan ahead. This includes watching the weather, knowing the water conditions, having the proper safety and emergency equipment in your watercraft, and always wearing a life jacket. Make a habit of checking all of your safety gear each time before you launch, especially after a long winter of being off the water. Deputies recommend making sure your vessel is mechanically sound and free of damage, especially the first time you take it out.
The time to make sure you have the right equipment that will function when you need it is before you put your boat in the water. When emergencies happen, seconds count.
