NEWS RELEASE
Early this morning Bonneville County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested a man who attempted to strangle a woman during an altercation. Deputies were sent to an open 911 call just after 2:00am in the 2700 N. block of 5th W. where Dispatchers could hear a disturbance between a male and female in the background. Upon arrival, Deputies contacted a woman who told them she had been in a physical altercation with 69-year-old Donnie Lee Winn.
The victim advised Deputies both of them had been drinking inside a camper on the property when they began to argue. The argument escalated and Mr. Winn knocked the victim to the floor putting his foot on her head to hold her down. The victim advised Mr. Winn eventually allowed her to get up from floor but then began choking her. Winn eventually left the camper before Deputies arrived. During the interview, Deputies observed bruising and injuries to the woman’s neck and shoulder.
Moments later Mr. Winn was spotted by Deputies walking nearby the residence and were able to detain him. Mr. Winn admitted to Deputies he had been in an argument with the victim that escalated to the point where she started to hit him. Winn told Deputies he tried to hold the victim down by the shoulders to keep her from hitting him before leaving the camper.
Deputies were able to listen to recordings of the 911 call to dispatch, hearing Winn make verbal threats to the victim of harm and using obscenities. A few minutes into the call, Mr. Winn was heard telling the victim he would choke the life out of her.
Winn was placed under arrest at that time and transported to the Bonneville County Jail where he was booked on a Felony charge of Aggravated Battery. The victim suffered minor injuries and bruising as a result of the incident.
